Levada walks

What does "Levada" mean?

From the Portuguese verb "levar" - to bring - Levadas are ingenious watering system the Portuguese settlers copied from their Arabian/Moorish occupation forces, in order to bring the abundant water from the North of the Island in to the fertile soils on the South.

Due to the overall low demand on Levada walks, there is not a strick plan and specific days. for booking. Let us know what your expectations are and we take you there!

PONTA DE SÃO LOURENÇO

São Lourenço Peninsula, the far east of the Island with a much drier climate and astonishing landscape!

With an extent of approximately 3km (one way - 6km return (approx.)), at Cais do Sardinha, you can choose to either return the same way or take the boat trip to Quinta do Lorde.

Pico do Areeiro - Pico Ruivo

Approximately 11km walk on steep ups and downs.

With breathtaking views, this is the walk to best understand the vulcanism of the Island!

Our honest opinion?

Absolutely, a MUST DO!

Levada do Rei

This out and back Levada in São Jorge, Santana has a length of approximately 13km (6,5km each way).

As you reach the Madre da Levada (from the latin mater) indulge yourself in nature. Awake all your senses and let your self go with the flow.
